This is the first of a series of three letters from the Mahatma K. H. directed to A. O. Hume. Apparently Hume had become dissatisfied with the responses of the Mahatma M. to his inquiries and addressed some questions to the Mahatma K. H. From the first sentence of the letter it is obvious that the Mahatma K. H. is well aware of the uncertain nature of the undertaking.

The Mahatma pays tribute to Hume’s accomplishments and his desire to serve the Society. But, he says, before he can answer questions and give any further explanations of the doctrine, he has to preface his reply with ‘a long introduction’.

It is not specifically so stated, but it would seem that Hume may have become a vegetarian, for the Mahatma says he has more chance than Sinnett who, even if he were to give up feeding on animals, would still crave such food, ‘a craving over which he would have no control and the impediment would be the same in that case’.

Sinnett in his ‘copy-book’ in which he preserved copies of a number of important letters. The copy-book is preserved in the British Museum. It seems reasonable that these are accurate copies of the original letters.
