Letters No. 77 to 80
DO
NOT MISS !!!
LETTER No. 77.—This very
short letter seems to be concerned with Hume’s increasing complaints about
Fern and his continued efforts to prove the Mahatmas in the wrong in
everything they are doing. Apparently he had written another letter about
Fern and the Mahatma is sending it to Sinnett. Along with it is apparently
the Mahatma’s reply, since he tells Sinnett to read the “two letters” before
taking them to Hume; and he asks Sinnett to be present when Hume reads them.
However, it seems that no
matter how difficult Hume might be personally, and how much he might try the
Mahatma’s patience, they feel he can help the Society — which, in many ways,
he did for a time. He was at that time still president of the Simla Eclectic
Society. He shortly afterward resigned from that position, however, and in
1884 resigned from the Theosophical Society.
Col. Chesney has been
appearing in several of the most recent letters and the Mahatma indicates
that DK has recently been doing something for him. This undoubtedly refers
to the portrait which DK was given permission to do for the colonel. All the
letters in this period of time came so closely together that it is
impossible to be absolutely positive of their exact order.
LETTER No. 78.—The
opening sentence refers again to the two portraits of the Mahatma K.H. which
DK was attempting — or had attempted — to do.
LETTER No. 79.—This is
written on the front of an envelope, 4” x 5”, addressed to Sinnett.
LETTER No. 80.—The first
two paragraphs have to do with Mrs Sinnett’s concern for the health of their
young son. Apparently Mrs Hume suffered from tuberculosis, and Mrs Sinnett
was concerned that she might carry some of the germs home with her after
visiting the Humes, or more likely she took little Denny with her when she
went up to see Mrs Hume. KH’s remark about DK noticing this concern while he
‘was on the watch’ is one of the several that we find throughout the Letters
about someone being ‘on the watch’. This procedure among the Adepts and
their assistants is not explained.

Letter No. 81
DO
NOT MISS !!!
LETTER No. 81.—The events
leading up to and surrounding the writing of this letter are extremely
complicated. The letter is important because it marks the beginning of the
end of Hume’s association with the Mahatmas. He did not formally resign from
the Theosophical Society until about two years later, although he resigned
as President of the Simla Eclectic T.S. sometime during this period. It may
be that the events connected with this letter influenced his decision. It is
necessary to go back a month or so to the receipt of the “Devachan” letter.

Letters No. 84, 85A & 85B
Famous Contradictions
DO
NOT MISS !!!
LETTER No. 84.—This
letter is really a “cover letter” for the one to follow.
LETTERS No. 85A & 85B.—This
two-part letter was enclosed in Letter No. 84 (see notes) and delivered to
Sinnett by two chelas of the Mahatma K.H.: Dharbagiri Nath (probably Babaji)
and Chandra Cusho.
Both Hume and Sinnett had
accused the Mahatma of contradicting themselves. The Mahatma K.H. had asked
them several times to make a list of the items in question, as he had no
time to go searching back through all the letters he had written. Sinnett
finally got around to making the list. He had sent it to K.H. some time
earlier and received it back with the Mahatma’s comments (this letter, No.
85) sometime in September.
Letter No. 85A consists
of the items listed by Sinnett. Letter No. 85B contains the Mahatma’s
answers, plus comments on some other matters. The numbers in brackets in the
Mahatma’s answers refer to those in Sinnett’s letter.
As contents of these
letter are substantial we may need two sessions to completely
cover this one letter.

Lecture 5: The Mental
Plane
We will be talking about both the higher and the lower mental
planes. This is a continuation of the lectures on death and after and the
astral plane. A short description of the heaven world and its inhabitants
will be covered. Does everyone go to heaven? We shall soon find out.
The Mental Plane is also the realm of the Mind, i.e. the plane
where thought arises. We will discuss further the subject of elemental
kingdoms and the elemental essence that ensoul thoughts. Hence, this lecture
serves as an introduction to 'thought-forms', one of the most important
aspects of nature. This lecture is useful, if not a prerequisite for the 6th
lecture on 'Thought-Forms'.

Thought-Forms
This is probably the most important lecture in the whole course
as knowledge of thought-forms will help us conduct ourselves better and live
a life in harmony with nature. The lecture will include the following: What
are thought-forms? How your thoughts affect others, near or far from you.
The virtue of having the right thoughts and the consequences of bad
thoughts.

The
Noble Eightfold Path
The subject of this last lecture is on 'The Noble Eightfold
Path'. This lecture gives the guidelines on how to quicken the
evolutionary pace; the perfection of virtues and the ideals of right living.
We will talk about how to live the life of a true theosophist and finding
peace and joy in the process, in other words, the application of
theosophical knowledge. This last lecture wraps up A Course in Theosophy.
